Outsourced Counsel Success Story
In 1996, Kathryn Harris
became counsel to Newbridge Networks Inc., now Alcatel USA, Inc., where she
introduced a legal outsourcing model that enabled the chief legal counsel of
Newbridge’s U.S. subsidiary to expand the legal support available to the
organization without hiring internal staff. Through this partnership, the
client obtained on-site legal services dedicated to supporting the Sales and
Service, Finance and HR departments of the company at significant savings. RLG
represented the Company in significant corporate transactions, handled
commercial contract, strategic alliance and licensing issues, prepared and
reviewed company policies, counseled regularly on employment matters and
disputes, and successfully represented the company in significant collection and
tax litigation. As a result of the success of the outsourcing model, RLG was
retained in 1998 to deliver the entire U.S. legal function on-site for the
client. Under this arrangement, the firm successfully managed the U.S. legal
function at 30-40% below national industry cost benchmarks, reducing the
company’s legal expense by at least $200K year over year.
